Thanks for the feedback. I decided to add tabs back in 2010, when I realized that just because I don't like them as the defacto screen pattern for all applications, doesn't mean they aren't a viable pattern.

So now I try to encourage designers and clients to explore other screen patterns as solutions before settling for tabs.

I hope you got something out of the post other than Clockwork Orange brain fuzz. I originally shared it as just a catalog of the web and desktop application screen patterns I have encountered over the past 10 years.

Love it -- tabs are mocked here, yet magically return in the 2010 Update. Also love how most of the examples feature tabs... I realize they're out of fashion (or at least they were when you wrote this), but tabs have always offered an intuitive alternative to some of the new-age bird nests you identify above. I fear that UCD has led us into a match over who can catch buzz for identifying the most intuitive pattern ever. Did it ever occur to anyone how paradoxical such a quest might be? When reading posts like this I feel like I'm playing with the penis statue in Clockwork Orange. Sometimes I wonder if UX stands for User Don't! :-P
